Steps to Follow to Becoming a Driving Instructor

To become a driving instructor, you need to follow a series of steps as listed below:

Step 1: Check Eligibility

The first step is to check whether you can become a driving instructor. You can opt to become an instructor if:

  • Your age is 21 years or above.

  • You have a driving licence for 3 years or more.

  • There are less than 5 penalty points on your licence.

  • You can read a licence plate from a distance of 27.5m (with or without glasses).

  • You have never been convicted of crimes related to violence, drugs or harassment.

  • You have never been banned from driving in the last 4 years.

Step 2: Apply to Become an Instructor

If eligible, you can proceed to the next step: applying to become a driving instructor. The process starts by getting a criminal record check and proving your identity by showing your passport, bank statement, driving licence, and utility bill. It is followed by going over the responsibilities of an instructor, filling out the form, and submitting it.

Step 3: Get Training

After applying, you must get training to pass three approved driving instructor (ADI) tests. Contact Hart Lane Driving School to start your driving tutor training in Leighton Buzzard with our skilled trainers.

Step 4: Pass Your Tests

Once your ADI application is accepted, you must take and pass your tests. Two of the three ADI tests are:

ADI Part 1

It’s a theory test consisting of MCQs and hazard perception. MCQs part consists of 100 questions on 4 different categories, which are:

  • Road procedures

  • Traffic signs and signals

  • Driving rules and regulations

  • Teaching techniques

Securing 20/25 marks in each category is required to pass the test. The hazard perception test includes 14 clips, each containing two hazards. You have to get 57/75 marks to pass this section.

ADI Part 2

After passing the theory test, you can take ADI Part 2. It’s the practical version of the ADI Part 1, which includes:

  • Eyesight test with or without glasses.

  • Question on vehicle safety.

  • Testing your driving abilities in different conditions.

Step 5: Get a Trainee Licence

You can opt for a trainee licence after passing ADI Part 2 to gain some teaching experience and get help for your last test. This licence will last for 6 months.

Step 6: Pass Instructor Ability Test

After gaining some experience in teaching, you can take your last test, ADI Part 3. In this test, you have to train a student for 45 minutes to show the following abilities:

  • Lesson Planning

  • Teaching Methods and Strategies

  • Risk Management

  • Encouraging Self-Reflection

Step 7: Get Registered and Start Working

After passing ADI Part 3, you can register for a certificate, paying the fees for it. Once you have the certificate, you can start your career as an instructor with a licenced driving school or start your own business.
